My First Pickleball Experience: Thoughts From a Beginner
I recently joined the Joysent team, and one of the first new experiences I had was trying Pickleball.
Before actually playing it, my impression of Pickleball was simple: it was a combination of table tennis, badminton, and tennis.
After playing twice at an indoor Pickleball facility, I started to understand why this sport has become so popular around the world.
When I first picked up the paddle and ball, my first thought was how lightweight the paddle felt. I have played table tennis and badminton for quite a long time, while my experience with tennis was limited to one session that lasted a few hours.
I am not a professional player — just someone who enjoys sports casually. I don’t have advanced techniques or a competitive playing style, but comparing Pickleball with the sports I have tried gave me some interesting impressions.
Compared with table tennis and badminton, a Pickleball paddle has a larger hitting surface, which makes it easier to make contact with the ball. The paddle itself also feels very different. Unlike a table tennis paddle with a rubber surface or a badminton racket with strings, a Pickleball paddle has a much harder surface. Even pressing on it with your hand, you can barely feel any movement.
Compared with tennis, Pickleball could almost be considered the “Pro Max version” in terms of court size and intensity — tennis requires more space, more power, faster movement, and higher physical demand.
At this point, someone who has never played Pickleball might ask:
“If Pickleball is just a lighter and easier version compared with these sports, where is the fun? Why should I play it?”
That is actually a very common question.
Many people have watched Pickleball videos online or heard friends talk about it, but they still wonder what makes this sport so enjoyable because they have never personally experienced it.
After my first time playing, I shared some videos on social media, and one of my friends immediately asked me:
“Is Pickleball actually fun?”
From my perspective as someone who has experience with table tennis, badminton, and a little tennis, my answer is yes — Pickleball is a very enjoyable sport, but its appeal comes from a completely different experience.
Here are some of my thoughts from different perspectives.
1. A Sport for Almost Everyone
The short answer: Pickleball is suitable for almost all ages.
Whether you are young or old, male or female, a beginner or someone with sports experience, Pickleball offers an easy entry point.
It does not require a large court, extreme speed, explosive power, high jumping ability, or professional-level endurance.
However, one thing I find interesting about Pickleball is that you can choose your own intensity.
If you want a casual workout, you can play at a comfortable pace. If you want a more competitive and physically demanding game, you can increase your movement, speed, and effort.
That flexibility is one of the things that makes Pickleball unique.
2. Finding Your Own Level of Challenge
In my opinion, almost anyone who is not already focused on professional-level competition in sports like tennis, badminton, or table tennis can find enjoyment in Pickleball.
You don’t need the powerful swings required in tennis.
You don’t need the extremely fast reactions required in table tennis.
You don’t need the explosive jumping and constant movement required in badminton.
But at the same time, if you want to challenge yourself, you can still bring those skills into the game — your power, reaction speed, movement, and endurance all become valuable.
Pickleball allows players to decide how much they want to challenge themselves.
3. Who Might Not Enjoy Pickleball?
Of course, every sport has its own audience.
If you are someone who only looks for extreme power, maximum speed, or intense physical stimulation, Pickleball might not give you the same adrenaline rush as some other sports.
It is not about explosive moments or overwhelming physical intensity.
Instead, Pickleball feels more like enjoying a great glass of wine.
You don’t rush it.
You slowly discover the details, the rhythm, and the strategy.
The fun does not always appear immediately — it gradually grows as you play more, understand the game better, and start finding your own style.
That is what makes Pickleball special.
It may not give you the strongest first impression, but the more time you spend with it, the more you understand why so many people become passionate about this sport.
For me, Pickleball is not just another racket sport.
It is a sport that brings people together, welcomes different skill levels, and allows everyone to find their own way to enjoy the game.
And that might be the biggest reason why Pickleball continues to attract more and more players around the world.
